Karua, Gachagua to Face Off in the Running Mates Debate on Tuesday

The organizers of the 2022 deputy presidential debate have announced that the event will take place on July 19th at the Catholic University for Eastern Africa in Karen, Nairobi from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

"We confirm and remind the public that the 2022 Deputy Presidential Debate will take place on Tuesday, July 9, 2022, at the Catholic University for Eastern Africa (CUEA) main campus situated in Karen, Nairobi, from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm," read a statement signed by Clifford Machoka, the head of the Presidential Debates Secretariat.

The much-awaited debate will proceed in two tiers, with the first featuring candidates whose popularity ratings, based on three recent opinion polls, stand below 5 percent while the second tier will involve candidates who have polled above 5 percent in the same surveys.

This means that Roots Party Presidential candidate George Wajackoyah’s running mate Justina Wamae will face off with Ruth Mutua who is deputisingzing Agano Party of Kenya flagbearer Waihiga Mwaure in the first tier debate which will be moderated by Linda Alela of TV47 and Jacob Kioria of KBC.

In the second tier debate, Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya coalition party presidential running mate Martha Karua will lock horns Rigathi Gachagua who is the running mate of UDA presidential candidate William Ruto. This debate will be moderated by Sophia Wanuna of KTN News and James Smart of NTV.

Panel discussions for both debates will be moderated by Trevor Ombija of Citizen TV.

This debate will be followed by the presidential debate on July 26th at the Catholic University for Eastern Africa. It will feature the four presidential candidates in this year’s election namely; Mwaure Waihiga (Agano Party), George Wajackoyah (Roots Party), Raila Odinga (Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya Coalition Party), and William Ruto (United Democratic Alliance).
