John Wanjohi Aug 13, 2022

Nominated MP Cecily Mbarire has won the Embu County gubernatorial contest.

Contesting on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party ticket, Mbarire was declared the winner on Saturday after bagging 108,610 votes closely followed by her main rival former Senator Lenny Kivuti of the Development Empowerment Party (DEP) who got 105,046 votes.

Speaking shortly after being awarded the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) clearance certificate, Mbarire said: "I want to thank God for giving us the win today. I feel humbled. I also thank our security agencies for ensuring there's peace in the county all through the election process.”

Mbarire joins six other women who have been so far elected as governors including Gladys Wanga (Homa Bay), Kirinyaga’s Anne Waiguru, Susan Kihika (Nakuru), Kawira Mwangaza (Meru), Wavinya Ndeti (Machakos) and Fatuma Achani (Kwale).
