Raila Rejects Presidential Election Results, to File a Petition

Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya coalition presidential candidate Raila Odinga has rejected the results of the August 9th presidential election where UDA candidate William Ruto was announced the winner. 

Terming the results as null and void, Odinga vowed to challenge Ruto’s victory in court, accusing IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati of violating the Constitution and electoral laws in his decision to declare Ruto the president-elect.

"What we saw yesterday was a travesty of the laws of Kenya by Wafula Chebukati and a minority of IEBC commissioners... The figures announced by Wafula Chebukati are null and void and must be quashed by a court of law. In our view there is no legally declared president-elect," said Odinga at KICC on Tuesday.

“We totally and without reservations reject the presidential results announced yesterday… We are pursuing constitutional and lawful channels and processes to invalidate Mr. Chebukati’s illegal and unconstitutional pronouncement.”

Odinga said they were shocked to learn that Chebukati alone decided to pronounce himself the supposed winner of the 2022 presidential elections, denying all commissioners access to the tally of the presidential vote. 

“The law on the IEBC provides that unless a unanimous decision is reached, a decision on any matter before the commission shall be by a majority of the members present and voting,” said Odinga.

"We will be pursuing all constitutional and legal options available to us. We will do so because we regard the many flaws in the election and the wrongs committed by IEBC as fatal to the process and outcome announced by Chebukati.”
