Four IEBC Commissioners Explain Why They Disputed Ruto's Victory
Four Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners who disowned the presidential election results announced by Chairman Wafula Chebukati claim the final tally is not mathematically correct.
They include IEBC Vice Chairperson Juliana Cherera, and commissioners Francis Wanderi, Irene Masit and Justus Nyang'aya.
Addressing the media at Serena Hotel on Tuesday, the four said the total aggregation of the votes cast was in excess by 0.01 percent, representing 142,000 votes.
They argued that Chebukati's aggregation is not logical and that the results lacked important ingredients to support the percentage scored by respective candidates.
"The total percentage from figures displayed by the four leaders is 100.01% which translates to 142,000. This will make a significant difference in the final results," Cherera said.
She further claimed that Chebukati overruled them and insisted on announcing the results despite the concerns they raised.
"We declined because the aggregation resulted in a total exceeding 100 percent which cast out on the accuracy of source of figures tallied and when we demanded that we verify our records, the chairman declined, overruled us and insisted on announcing the results," said Cherera.
She added: "Contrary to the constitution and legislation, the results declared did not indicate the number of registered voters, total number of votes cast or number of rejected votes if any. In this regard, the results by Chebukati lacked the total number of votes cast to support the percentages scored by the four candidates.”
Chebukati declared UDA’s William Ruto as the winner with 7,176,141 votes (50.49 percent of the total votes) followed by Raila Odinga of the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition with 6,942,930 votes (48.85 percent), Roots Party candidate George Wajackoyah 61,969 votes (0.44 percent) and David Mwaure 1,987 votes (0.27 percent).
