Former Attorney-General Githu Muigai to Lead IEBC Lawyers in Presidential Petition at the Supreme Court

IEBC has picked former Attorney-General Prof. Githu Muigai to lead its legal team in the presidential election petition to be filed by Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya coalition.

The Raila Odinga-led coalition is expected to file the petition at the Supreme Court by 2.00 pm on Monday challenging president-elect William Ruto’s victory in the August 9th presidential election.

Nation report that Muigai will head a team of more than 10 attorneys representing the election commission in the case including Kamau Karori, Abdikadir Mohamed, Eric Gumbo, Wambua Kilonzo, Peter Wanyama, George Murugu, Mahat Somane, Cyprian Wekesa and Edwin Mukele.

The team will be backed by over 10 other advocates in research and documentation.

Ruto was declared the winner of the August 9th presidential election after garnering 7,176,141, representing 50.49 percent of the total votes.

Odinga, who came in second with 6,942,930 votes (48.85 percent), has rejected Ruto’s victory, accusing IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati of interfering with the results.

“At this time, nobody can say that we have a winner. I hear people say that we have a president-elect. If we haven’t heard the unanimous decision from all the 7 IEBC Commissioners, then this is shameful.”

“We have decided to go to the Supreme Court to table our evidence and show that it was not an election but a big joke,” Odinga said on Saturday.

Four of the seven IEBC commissioners—vice chairperson Juliana Cherera, Justus Nyang'aya, Irene Masit and Francis Wanderi—also rejected the results announced by Chebukati.
