Police Search for a Nairobi Church Caretaker Who Stole Sh1.5 Million from the Altar
Police in Nairobi are in pursuit of a suspect who allegedly broke into ACK All Saints Mountain View Church in Nairobi’s Kangemi area and made away with Sh1.5 million.
The money, which was meant for the church’s development, was raised during a service on Sunday and had been kept in a drawer at the altar, according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
“When the church elder John Wainanina and treasurer Elizabeth Njoki, went to the church to collect the money today morning, they found the doors ajar, which was unusual,” DCI noted.
“A closer look at the Lord’s table where bread and wine are consecrated, they were shocked to find it ransacked and the money that had been kept in a drawer beneath the altar missing.”
The church representatives reported the incident to Kangemi police station, with preliminary investigations identifying the church’s caretaker George Mburu, who has since gone missing, as the perpetrator of the crime.
Mburu is said to have tampered with the church’s electric power to disable surveillance cameras before stealing the contributions, DCI said.
“Shocked members of the flock who reside close to the church milled around conversing in low tones, as they tried to come to terms with the disappearance of the money meant for the development of the community church,” DCI shared.
