Police have identified the suspect behind the murder of Barack Onyango Odour, a bodyguard attached to opposition leader Raila Odinga’s wife Ida Odinga.

The assailant, identified as Collins Okundi, is on the run and is being pursued by detectives, the National Police Service (NPS) said in a statement on Friday.

“The National Police Service confirms an incident that resulted in the death of a police officer who was shot dead in Kisumu in cold blood. The incident is under active investigation,” NPS said.

Police have appealed for information to aid in the arrest of Okundi, who fled the murder scene with the firearm that he robbed the slain officer.

“A second victim also shot by the assailant is in a local hospital receiving treatment. As we appeal for information to aid in his arrest, members of the public are equally cautioned to treat the suspect as armed and dangerous,” NPS added.

Kisumu County Police Commander Alphonse Wambua said the suspect shot the deceased twice on the head and leg. He also shot and injured a woman who was in the company of the officer.

Police said Oduor and the woman had left Dondez Bar & Restaurant in Kisumu and were accosted by Okundi, who is a manager at the entertainment joint, as they entered Victoria Gardens apartment in Uzima area at around 3 a.m.

A brawl ensued between the three and the suspect snatched a pistol from the officer before committing the offense.

"The body was transferred to Star Hospital Mortuary. A spent cartridge and bullet head of 9mm were recovered at the scene," a police report on the incident reads.
