Court Frees Kiambu Politician Accused of Murdering Her Husband

John Wanjohi Oct 24, 2022

Kiambu politician Gladys Chania, who is accused of killing her husband George Mwangi was on Monday released on a Sh1 million bond following her arrest last week.

Chania, a former Kiambu County Woman Representative aspirant, is the prime suspect in the gruesome murder of her husband whose body was found wrapped in a plastic bag and dumped in Kieni Forest in Gatundu North on October 12th.

Police claim Chania came up with the scheme to eliminate her husband over his alleged relationship with a local school secretary. She is said to have colluded with her farmhand Maurice Mbugua, who was also granted a Sh1 million bond.

Preliminary investigations determined that Mwangi was killed in their house and later dumped in the forest, disputing Chania’s claim that her husband walked downstairs and disappeared on October 9th. Chania, a former Kiambu TNA party coordinator, filed a missing person’s report at Kamwangi police station and later that evening at Mwea police post.

Mwangi, a 58-year-old electrical engineer and road contractor based in Rwanda’s capital of Kigali, arrived in the country on September 13th and was scheduled to fly out on October 18th.

Chania told police that her husband went downstairs that morning and then disappeared from their home in Mangu, Kiambu. County.

"My husband was alive on Sunday morning. He went downstairs and never came back. He did not carry his mobile phone and in the evening when he failed to show up, the next day I reported the matter at Kamwangi police station and later at Mwea police post, which is within my jurisdiction,’’ Chania said as quoted by Nation. “We have been married for 24 years and have three children. He had not expressed any fear for his life.”

Detectives said initial investigations show the deceased was hit on the head with a blunt object and his face disfigured with acid.
