Body of Pakistani Journalist Shot Dead in Kenya Flown Home

John Wanjohi Oct 25, 2022

The body of renowned Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif, who was killed in Kenya on Sunday, has been flown back home for burial, his wife Javeria Siddique said on Tuesday.

Through social media, Siddique shared pictures of her husband’s body being loaded onto a van in Islamabad with a label reading "Here lies the remains of the late Muhammed Arshad".

"My husband @arsched coming back home in a coffin. Authorities in Kenya are answerable to us," she tweeted.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday phoned President Ruto over the shooting of Sharif by Kenyan police officers in an alleged case of “mistaken identity.”

Shehbaz urged the Kenyan president to ensure a fair and transparent investigation into the shooting and fast-track the repatriation of the journalist’s body to the South Asian country.

The National Police Service (NPS) said Sharif was killed by a barrage of bullets fired by General Service Unit (GSU) police personnel from Magadi Training School on Sunday night.

The slain journalist was being driven to Nairobi by his brother Khurram Ahmed when they were signaled to stop by police officers at a roadblock in Magadi, Kajiado County before they opened fire at their vehicle, according to a report filed at Magadi police station. Police claim the two ignored a roadblock of small stones, forcing the officers to open fire.

Reports indicate Sharif was in Kenya to work on a corruption case titled 'Behind Closed Doors' for people in high places and those who enable it.

His shooting sparked reactions from the public, with some suggesting that he was assassinated.
