John Wanjohi Nov 01, 2022

The new parliament tower which has been under construction for about 10 years is finally ready for occupation.

MPs will be allocated 280 offices of the 331 available on the 28-storey building from November 7th, according to National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula.

"In order to ensure that members occupy the offices immediately they are handed over, I have directed the clerk to prepare the schedule of allocation of the 280 offices being equitable share of the apportioned to the National Assembly, regrettably around 63 members of this house will not be accommodated in the new office block,” Wetang’ula said on Tuesday.

Wetang’ula said priority will be given to the leadership of the House starting with the deputy whips, chairperson of the committees and vice chairs, members of the speaker’s panel, and members serving more than one term.

"The election of committee chairpersons and the vice chairpersons will be concluded by Friday, (November 4) and there I have directed the clerk to carry out the allocation next week from Monday 7th November 2022.”

First-time MPs will be allocated the offices by balloting on November 9th while those who miss out on the new offices will get space in other existing parliament buildings.

The office block, constructed by China Jiangxi Construction Company at a cost of approximately Sh8 billion, consists of 331 office buildings, 26 committee rooms, and a parking space. Standing at 125 meters, it ranks among the tallest buildings in the capital.

The complex stands between Continental House and County Hall, next to Parliament buildings, and was developed by the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC).
