Raila Lashes Out at President Ruto over Plans to Impose Higher Taxes on Kenyans
Opposition leader Raila Odinga has once again lashed out at President Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration over their plans to impose more taxes on Kenyans.
Addressing mourners at a burial in Ganze, Kilifi County on Saturday, Odinga said Kenyans are already burdened by the high cost of living, and raising taxes would inflict more pain on them.
While vowing to resist any attempts to increase taxes, Odinga insisted that it is the duty of the government in power to address the challenges facing Kenyans.
“The most important thing is to curb corruption, not add taxes. Kenyans are already grappling with high taxation, we will not allow that,” said Odinga.
He further accused Ruto and his team of hoodwinking Kenyans to vote for them, saying their campaign was based on false promises.
“They promised to lower food prices in 100 days immediately after they were sworn in, now they are asking for one year. They promised you free Sh50 billion Hustlers fund, now they are telling you you will repay the money with 10 percent interest,” he added.
He pointed out that the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya coalition would have transformed the country with their solid plan were it not for IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati whom he accused of stealing their victory.
Odinga also poked holes in the ongoing investigations into extrajudicial killings allegedly committed by the DCI’s Special Service Unit (SSU), which has since been disbanded.
“Let them stop this drama we are seeing, many innocent Kenyans who died who were ICC witnesses. People like Jacob Juma and Chris Musando were also killed. Their murders remain unresolved yet those behind them are known,” Odinga said.
