Conjoined Twins Born in 2021 Die at KNH, Mother Appeals for Help to Clear a Sh3 Million Bill
A Kenyan woman who gave birth to conjoined twins in November 2021 is appealing for help to pay a Sh3 million hospital bill after the babies died two weeks ago.
21-year-old Mary Moraa said the babies, who were joined at the chest down to their abdomen, died while undergoing treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) on December 23rd.
“For the past year three weeks, I was staying in the hospital ward with my babies. The babies left a huge bill which I am unable to raise, am calling for well-wishers to help me raise funds,” Moraa told Capital News.
The twins were born at Lenmek Hospital in Kisii through the Caesarian Section after the mother, who was 19 years old at the time, developed birth complications.
Moraa said doctors at KNH told her to wait for the babies to grow in order for them to be separated as they were sharing a heart and they depended on each other to survive.
“One baby had a bigger heart while the other one had a small one, the one with a small heart depended on her twin sister for all heart functions,” she added.
The distraught mother said the baby with a bigger heart developed pneumonia which persisted, and she later developed difficulties in breathing.
The twins were rushed to the hospital’s ICU on the night of December 22nd and both died a day later.
Moraa, who hails from Bobasi, is appealing to well-wishers for financial help to offset the hospital bill estimated at Sh3 million.
She claimed her spouse, who used to visit, vanished and switched off all his phones and her family also went silent and has not been supportive.
