Kenyan Men Have an Average of Seven Sexual Partners, New Survey Reveals

Kenyan men have an average of 7.4 sexual partners, according to a new report dubbed the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS) 2022.

The survey conducted by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) also found that the average number of sexual partners among Kenyan women is 2.3.

“Of those with more than one partner in the last 12 months, 24% of women and 45% of men reported using a condom during their last sexual intercourse,” reads the report.

The KNBS drew the sample for the study from the Kenya Household Master Sample Frame (K-HMSF), which the agency uses to conduct household-based sample surveys in Kenya.

Data collection for the survey was carried out between February 17th and July 13th, 2022.

In the 12 months preceding the survey, 19 percent of women had sex with a person who neither was their husband nor lived with them. Only 37 percent of these women reported using a condom during their last sexual intercourse with such a partner.

“Thirty-five percent of men reported having sex in the last 12 months with a person who neither was their wife nor lived with them, and 68% of these men reported using a condom during their last sexual intercourse with such a partner,” the report adds.

On the use of contraceptives, the study found that 63 percent of currently married women are using a contraceptive. 

57 percent of these were found to be using modern methods such as sterilization, injectables, intrauterine devices (IUDs), contraceptive pills, implants, condoms, emergency contraception, the standard days method, and the lactational amenorrhea method.

“Among currently married women, the most commonly used methods are injectables (20%), implants (19%), and contraceptive pills (8%). Among sexually active unmarried women, male condoms are the most commonly used contraceptive method (20%), followed by injectables (16%) and implants (11%),” the report states.
