Murang'a: Two Suspected Thugs Gunned Down, Sh1.1 Million Recovered After Unaitas Sacco Heist
Two armed robbers were on Sunday morning gunned down following a fierce shootout with police officers at Kinyona Forest in Kigumo, Murang’a county.
Police said the two were part of a six-man gang that staged a robbery at Unaitas Sacco Mununga branch, within Kigumo town on Saturday and made away with an unknown amount of money after disarming a police officer and taking possession of his G3 rifle.
The gang had on February 25th wrestled an AK-47 rifle loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition from a police officer on patrol within the Muthithi area, which they used in Saturday’s robbery incident at Unaitas, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said.
In a joint operation by officers from Murang’a county backed up by an elite team from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, officers combed Kinyona Forest on Sunday morning and came across the two, who challenged them to a duel.
“What followed was a volley of fierce gunfire that brought the entire forest ecosystem to a standstill, as the officers returned fire with remarkable precision killing the two on the spot,” DCI noted.
Following the operation, two police rifles and a bag containing Sh1.13 million stolen from UNAITAS Sacco were recovered.
Bodies of the two were taken to Murang'a Level V Hospital mortuary awaiting identification as a manhunt for the rest of the suspects continue.
