President Ruto Speaks Out as Raila Declares Monday Protests Weekly

John Wanjohi Mar 20, 2023

President Ruto has spoken out following Monday’s protests by the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition.

The president emphasized that he will not condone impunity, saying Kenya will be governed by the rule of law and everyone must operate within the constitution.

“Nothing extra-legal will be part of what we do as a nation. As we enjoy our rights as individuals, we must be careful to ensure that we do not trample on the rights of others,” he said.

Ruto was speaking on Monday at State House, Nairobi, where he witnessed the swearing-in of Solicitor General Shadrack Mose.

On Monday, Azimio chief Raila Odinga announced that the coalition will be holding weekly protests across the country every Monday until the government addresses their demands.

“Every Monday there will be a strike, there will be a demonstration,” he told crowds of protestors in Nairobi. “The war has begun; it will not end until Kenyans get their rights.”

On Monday, chaotic scenes were witnessed in Nairobi and Kisumu where police fired teargas and deployed water cannon on protesters while arresting others.

Odinga had threatened to lead protestors in marching to State House but all roads leading there were blocked by heavily armed anti-riot police officers.

He has called for mass action against President Ruto’s government over the high cost of living and last year’s “stolen” election.
