Tenants Ordered to Vacate Thindigua Building After it Developed Cracks
The Kiambu County government and a multi-sectoral team on Buildings Construction have ordered tenants of a residential building in Thindigua estate to vacate with immediate effect.
The five-storeyed building named Jennid Apartments, which is on the verge of sinking and collapse, has three blocks of 40 units fully occupied.
Reports indicate that the building that was constructed about 10 years ago started developing cracks in the walls and slabs, exposing exposed the weakness of the structure.
"The cracks are linked to a foundation failure and the county structural engineers have declared the building as unsafe for occupation," Kiambu county government said in a statement.
Salome Muthoni, the County Executive Committee Member in charge of Lands, Housing and Physical Planning, said her department received reports of a sinking building in the estate.
The department immediately involved a multi-sectoral team in order to establish the cause.
"We have reached a decision, in conjunction with the developer and the other security teams that are here that all the tenants should vacate the houses today,” Muthoni said.
In the past few months, Kiambu County has recorded incidents of building collapse, leading to deaths and injuries amid claims of collusion between the owners and corrupt county officials.
