Senator Cherargei Blasted After Fake Claim of President Ruto’s Cow Giving Birth to Triplets
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei was on Tuesday exposed for spreading false information on social media.
Through Twitter, the second-time senator shared a photo of a cow and three calves, claiming that they were from President Ruto's farm.
"H.E Ruto cow gives birth to triplets of his symbolic leadership. 5 years of backfilling debt hole created by Uhuru + Raila into economic transformation, 5 yrs for economic stability, 5yrs of Kenya prosperity of milk + honey... 15 yrs of uninterrupted economic transformation,” he captioned the photo of healthy-looking mother and calves.
Hawk-eyed Kenyans, as well as the Media Observer’s fact-checking desk were quick to note that the photo was actually posted by a German Agricultural Facebook page on January 30th.
The page, 'CRV Deutschland' shared a series of photos taken at the farm of two young boys Jason and Jonas who were celebrating the birth of the triplets.
"Brothers Jason and Jonas were not badly surprised when their favorite cow Elisa gave birth to not one but directly three calves without any problems. Since then, the three calves Emma, Ella and Emil have enjoyed best health and abundant cuddles and are diligently fed by the two proud brothers from Lichtenau every day," the page posted.
"We would like to thank the Agethen family for the great picture and wish them triplets a lot of joy!" they added.
Twitter users called out Senator Cherargei for attempting to use the downloaded image to fool Kenyans.
“The Media Observer team conducted a reverse image search and discovered a post on https://t.co/GWfPHCoAzj that had similar photos,” Media Observer - iV Network of Fact-Checking Desks wrote.
Former MP Kabando wa Kabando tweeted: “Chairman of Senate Committee on Justice is faking photos and concocting stories. With friends like these, President Ruto needs no enemies. Senator, you've abrogated the Public Officers Ethics Act.”
Solomon Kimani wrote: “Mnaiba picha kwa social media mnakuja kusifu Ruto nazo, shame shame.”
“Citizen-led Fact-checking is the future, reverse image search shows this image isn’t from Africa. Leaders lead by example to tell our own Kenyan stories,” said Odhiambo Ogola.
“This is shameful from you and you should style up. We know you are struggling to get an eye of the president but you don't stoop this low,” Tilingi said.
