Registration Process for Evacuation of Kenyans in Sudan Kicks Off

John Wanjohi Apr 22, 2023

The State Department for Diaspora Affairs has commenced the registration process for the evacuation of Kenyans living and working in Sudan.

In a notice on Saturday, the department asked those who wish to be evacuated to contact them immediately by text or WhatsApp (+249 9900194854 / +254 114757002) with the following details: name, passport number, exact location, contact and details of people in their household.

The crisis in Sudan began on April 15th after two rival factions of the military government disagreed over how the country should transition to civilian rule.

Clashes then broke out across the country, mainly in the capital city of Khartoum and the Darfur region.

The country has been under the rule of Sudan's army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which together toppled a civilian government in an October 2021 coup.

On Friday, Kenya’s President William Ruto offered to host mediation between the two conflicting parties in Sudan.

Ruto said Kenya has a strong track record in effectively facilitating peacemaking and settlement of political conflict.

¨Kenya is strongly persuaded that a peacefully negotiated solution to the conflict in Sudan is within reach and, as always, stands ready to make our contribution,” he said.

He added: “We invite the parties to take full advantage of this opportunity and urge IGAD, AU and the UN to mobilize an effective international coalition to support a comprehensive peacemaking agenda for Sudan.”
