Raila's Azimio Coalition to Resume Anti-government Protests on May 2nd

Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition has announced it will resume anti-government protests on May 2nd.

Azimio executive council chairman Wycliffe Oparanya said the opposition coalition decided to resume demonstrations due to President Ruto administration’s failure to commit to holding constructive bipartisan talks.

He also accused the Kenya Kwanza government of showing no commitment to addressing the demands made by Azimio, among them the high cost of living.

He noted that the government has instead resorted to propaganda that the prices of essential commodities have decreased when the facts across Kenya indicate otherwise.

"It is therefore a mockery of the envisaged dialogue to have him at the negotiation table for Kenya Kwanza. Kenya Kwanza has also shown no commitment to lowering the cost of basic goods including unga, fuel, electricity and school fees,” Oparanya said in a press release.

Oparanya stated that Azimio remains committed to an extra-parliamentary dialogue that should be honest, transparent, meaningful, and bipartisan in conception and execution.

He added that the planned protests will be limited to Nairobi.

Azimio leader Raila Odinga called off their bi-weekly protests on April 2nd after President Ruto invited the opposition for bi-partisan talks to address their grievances.

Ruto suggested the creation of a bipartisan parliamentary committee to work through concerns over the reconstitution of a new electoral commission.

Odinga welcomed Ruto’s “olive branch” but warned: “We reserve our right to call for demonstrations should this process not bear fruit.”
