Chaos Erupts in Kisumu, Leaves One Dead and Two Injured
Residents in Jua Kali, Kisumu protested on Tuesday following an alleged police shooting of three people in the neighbourhood.
One person has succumbed with two others receiving treatment in hospital. Kisumu County Police Commander Alphonse Wambua said that investigations are underway to avail more information on the malee.
The mess flared after the police tried in vain to stop a PSV vehicle, thereafter they resorted to using teargas and allegedly fired live bullets that hit 3 passersby. Of the 3 people shot, a lady died while receiving treatment at Aga Khan Hospital. Kisumu Resident Association chairman Audi Ogada confirmed the fatality and reported that the other victims were nursing gunshot wounds at the Kisumu county hospital.
Kisumu residents have strongly condemned the shooting and called upon the Kisumu Central police station to own up to the mistake. They expressed aggravation in the police use of live bullets.
"During the scuffle, the woman, who was just a passenger on a motorbike, was shot and two people were injured on the leg and hand as the trigger-happy shot at people," said Mr Jack Osen, chairman of the Jua Kali Artisans.
Shops in Jua Kali remained closed on Tuesday morning as traders marched to the Kisumu Central Police Station to express their displeasure.
