Mudavadi Tells Uhuru to Relinquish Jubilee Leadership, Focus on Peacekeeping

Martin Olage May 20, 2023

Confusion has characterised leadership wrangles in the Jubilee party with the brawl leaving a trail of casualties from both sides of the divide.

On Friday, East Africa Legislative Assembly MP Kanini Kega's faction expelled Jubilee Vice-Chairman David Murathe and Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni. The decision by Kega's camp comes two days before Uhuru's embattled National Delegates Convention (NDC) event scheduled for Monday. Meanwhile, Prime Cabinet Secretary has sounded his viewpoint on the matter, urging the retired president to relinquish leadership of the party.

While speaking during a tree-planting exercise at Egerton University, the Prime CS said Uhuru should abdicate the leadership role to another Jubilee member and quit politics. He urged Mr Kenyatta to emulate former presidents Mwai Kibaki and Daniel Arap Moi. He further conveyed that Uhuru should focus on peacekeeping in the region.

“We call on Uhuru Kenyatta to be a statesman and promote peace in the region,” Mr Mudavadi said.

However, Jubilee members allied with Mr Kenyatta have reiterated that the Jubilee NDC will proceed as planned. The party secretary general Jeremiah Kioni affirmed that the NDC will help dislodge rebel MPs. The rebel MPs in the party denounce the monthly deductions of Sh 10,000 on account that non-elected individuals run the party.
