Former Mungiki Leader Maina Njenga Declared Wanted by DCI

Martin Olage May 24, 2023

On Monday night, the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) announced Ex-Mungiki leader Maina Njenga as a wanted person.

In a statement, the DCI said detectives posted in Nakuru County are in search of former Mungiki leader Maina Nenga following the recovery of two firearms and over 90 rolls of bhang at his residence. The police made the recovery on May 12 when they raided Njenga's residence in Ngomongo village in Bahati, Nakuru. During the raid, officers nabbed eight suspects to aid with their investigations.

"Officers arrested eight suspects aged between 37 and 58 during the raid. They also found three rounds of 9mm blank ammunition hidden in one of the rooms," the DCI said in a post.

The police reported that one of the recovered firearms was a homemade pistol with the potential of firing, while the other had its serial number scarred. The DCI called on anyone with information on his whereabouts to report, adding that the suspect has since gone missing.  On May 12, police raided Njenga's three homes in Nakuru Nairobi and Laikipia where they arrested 8 individuals linked to the Mungiki sect. Sources reveal that DCI purposed to charge Mr Njenga for allowing his home to house members of the outlawed group.

"On diverse dates between May 12 and May 18, 2023, in Nakuru North Sub County, Nakuru County jointly with others not before the court upon the reasonable ground were identified as members of an outlawed organized criminal group to wit Mungiki," the charge sheet for the twelve read in part.

Despite knowledge of being sought by the DCI, Njenga arrived at the late Mukami's burial service with Raila and left together. On May 17, 2023, the ex-Mungiki leader received an anticipatory bond of Sh100,000 from the Milimani Law Courts.
