Meru MPs Want County Split Into Two

Meru lawmakers want the County to be split into two, Nyambene and Imenti counties. 

Tigania East Mp Mpuru Aburi leads the push for the split with eleven MPs backing his move. According to Mpuru, the split will give Nyambene County five constituencies including Tigania West, Tigania East, Igembe Central, Igembe South and Igembe North. The Meru legislatures believe that the split will enable the two counties to channel more revenue to the county, enabling it to make major development strides. 

A 2019 census conducted by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) informed that Meru County had a population above 1.5 million people. Out of the total population, the Nyambene region dominates the entire county with over 800,000 people. Meru parliamentary congress chairman Mugambi Rindikiri hinted that processes are underway to split the county into two. The Buuri Constituency MP explained their push for the split by saying that Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has been favouring some sections of the county in her development agenda. 

According to Rindikiri, the division will achieve equality among the regions. Meru Senator Kathuri Murungi echoed similar remarks, saying all the constituencies deserve equal share since none is superior to the other. He added that the move will ensure all residents are accommodated. On Saturday, Senator Kathuri arranged a leadership caucus at Maua stadium with all the elected and non-elected leaders to discuss issues of importance to the county. 

“The agenda of two counties is unstoppable, for two counties is not enmity but it is all about resources,” said Hon Julius Taitumu Igembe North Mp.
