Police Clash With Supporters of ex-Mungiki Leader Maina Njenga at DCI Headquarters

Police encountered resistance from people who back former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga near the DCI offices on Thursday.

Njenga had arrived at the offices of the Directorate of Criminal Investigation located on Kiambu Road following an order from Nakuru's DCI to present himself at the Nairobi headquarters. Early Thursday morning, his followers gathered at the site, shouting out his title of 'Chairman' in vigour as they awaited their leader. However,  as they moved closer to the DCI entrance, police lobbed tear gas to push the crowd away.

"Tunataka Chairman akuje," the crowd shouted.

On Wednesday, Njenga presented himself at the Nakuru law courts following reports that police were pursuing him. He was accompanied by his legal counsel Ndegwa Njiru when he showed up in court. Thereafter, the ex-Mungiki leader went to the Nakuru County Directorate of Criminal Investigation and issued his statement. It is there that he was directed to present himself at the DCI headquarters in Nairobi, Thursday.

The ex-leader of the Mungiki sect had received an anticipatory bail on Tuesday barring the police from apprehending him regarding allegations of possessing two firearms and ninety rolls of bang. His appearance today at the DCI headquarters was flanked by Azimio leaders Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa, Mwangi wa Iria, George Wajackoyah and embattled Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni.
