Wetangula Instructs Ruto Govt to Review CBC
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula on Sunday, June 11, signalled the beginning of an effort to review the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) following objections by citizens.
During a church service in Elgeyo Marakwet County, Wetangula proclaimed having requested President William Ruto's administration to consider the public's input into the implementation of the programme. The former Bungoma senator clarified that he does not support the complete abandonment of the curriculum, but that he only proposes a review of the programme.
“Today I have asked the government to consider reviewing the new CBC education system to ensure effective implementation. I asked the government to consider prioritising discussing issues raised by the public on CBC during the cabinet meetings,” the former senator stated.
The speaker highlighted the importance of reviewing the curriculum, noting that education is an ongoing process and the government should take into account the views of all stakeholders. He regretted that the system devised by the previous administration was not suitable for students. Wetangula's utterance came after President Ruto established a Working Party on Education Reform task force by way of a Gazette Notice dated September 2022, tasked with assessing the CBC in the nation.
On April 2023, the President extended the term of the task force until 12th 2023. Ruto detailed that the task force will assess the learners' performance, the quality assurance and CBC standards, as well as teaching assignments. He added that it would also evaluate the technology used for curriculum delivery, the effects of improved learning outcomes and school management.
