Politicians to Pay Sh100,000 to Hold Rallies at Kamukunji Grounds
Political rallies and religious gatherings at Nairobi's popular Kamukunji Grounds are not bringing in revenue for the county government.
This has been disclosed by Charles Kerich, the County Executive Committee Member for Finance. Kamukunji grounds is one of the favourite venues for political rallies within the city. Mr Kerich suggested that the county, headed by Governor Johnson Sakaja, intends to increase revenue from Sh10 billion to Sh19.99 billion in the 2023/24 fiscal year by utilizing a mixture of tax regulations and tax policy reforms through the Nairobi City County Revenue Authority (NCCRA). To achieve the revenue boost, the county proposes to implement Sh100,000 fees for political rallies at Kamukunji Grounds while religious gatherings will part with Sh20,000 per day to use the venue. Flag-off ceremonies of two hours or less will be charged Sh2,000 per hour.
Additionally, fees have been introduced for events at Jevanjee Gardens. Events that last no longer than two hours will cost Sh3,000. Charitable organisations using Jevanjee will need to pay Sh15,000 per day, and music concerts will cost Sh10,000. Additionally, lunchtime preachers at Jevanjee and Kamukunji grounds will be charged Sh500 per day. The bill is set to be put forward when the Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) return from their short break.
The county has also introduced an annual fee of Sh4,000 for vendors using City Park and a trading licence fee of Sh5,000. Groups of fewer than 100 people using City Park will have to pay Sh5,000 each year, while groups of more than 100 members will need to pay Sh10,000. Recording of gospel and secular music in City Park is priced at Sh5,000 per hour, and commercial advertising in the parks is Sh10,000 per hour. Preachers aiming to do gospel sessions in the parks during lunchtime must pay the county government Sh1,000 per day.
