Former Cabinet Secretary Munya to Lead Azimio Protests in Mt Kenya East
Former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya has declared his intention to lead protests in the Mt Kenya East region starting Wednesday.
During a conversation with Meru FM on Monday night, the former CS affirmed his support for Azimio leader Raila Odinga and his criticism of the Kenya Kwanza administration. He intends to halt his long political hiatus by instigating opposition rallies in Meru, Muthara, and Maua, citing insecurity in Meru and the excessive cost of living in the country. He will work with disability activist Mike Makarina in leading demonstrations in Meru.
"I am now ready to fight for Kenyans and I won't be intimidated by government officials. If we do not have a strong opposition at this time, this country will go to the dogs. In Meru, many people have been killed despite several meetings by government officials," said the former CS.
Munya believes the Azimio protests, as well as the 10 million signature drive, will help promote electoral reforms and measures to lower prices. He stated that Kenyans have the sovereign power to dictate how their affairs should be run, conveying that the signature campaign is meant to demonstrate Kenyans' discontent over the Kenya Kwanza regime.
Mr Munya poked holes in the ongoing tea reforms led by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, saying that the legislations were tabled under his watch. He further stated that the opposition is determined to organize protests and rallies in a peaceful manner, yet the police are using excessive brutality against the demonstrators. The former CS castigated Ruto's government for engaging in 'too much talk' without action. His assertion echoes political pundit Mutahi Ngunyi's statement which questions when the Head of State intends to start working for Kenyans.
