Kalonzo, Karua Rally Supporters to Turn up in Large Numbers for Next Anti-Gov't Demos
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has urged Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition followers to turn up in large numbers for the planned protests next week.
Speaking after visiting those who sustained injuries during the Wednesday protests, Kalonzo insisted that next week's protests would be peaceful. He regretted that those who were shot during the demos did not possess any crude weapons and some were even uninvolved in the protests. Kalonzo mentioned that everybody should follow the law regardless of one's political stance as outlined in Article 37 of the Constitution.
Nark Kenya leader Martha Karua accompanied Kalonzo to the Machakos Level 5 hospital where he praised Machakos county governor Wavinya Ndeti and the medical staff for providing treatments to the wounded without discrimination. However, she expressed her dissatisfaction with how the victims were treated by the police, as some were merely caught up in the chaos of the demonstrations, not actually taking part in them. Karua also accused the police of disrupting the peaceful demonstrations despite the protests being peaceful.
Karua decried the violence observed during the demonstrations, emphasizing that it should not be accepted. The Narc Kenya leader also reminded officers that they are not excluded from the brunt of the high cost of living. She then urged Kenyans not to be scared to demonstrate, citing the new constitution as an example of what can be achieved through protests.
In a separate statement, Machakos governor Wavinya Ndeti denounced the police brutality and pledged to pay for all medical bills of those admitted to Machakos level 5 hospital. She said her administration would assist the bereaved families with the expenses related to the funeral. The hospital's management reported that thirteen people had been hospitalized, two of them college students.
