Mama Ngina Security Detail Withdrawn

Martin Olage Jul 18, 2023

The official security detail of former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta has been withdrawn.

According to sources, the officers stationed at her homes in Gatundu and Muthaiga were at 5 pm on Tuesday ordered to report to their nearest police station. However, Mama Ngina was not notified beforehand. It remains unclear why the details have been withdrawn.

“We withdrew the guards from there for some debriefing but they will be back. She is entitled to security,” said one official who asked not to be named.

On Monday, the security detail of opposition leader Raila Odinga was withdrawn. The move by the state is believed to be a counter-offensive against the planned mass protests which are scheduled to take place over three days. Other Azimio leaders including Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, over four governors, and over 50 Azimio MPs have also had their security details removed.

The Azimio leader is advocating for a reduction in the cost of living. He is calling for the withdrawal of the Finance Act, 2023 which he blasts for proposing harsh taxes. Raila had earlier confirmed that the scheduled protests for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday will proceed as planned. He declared that the demonstration will be transformative and encouraged Kenyans to prepare themselves for it.

Meanwhile, Narok County Senator Ledama Olekina has claimed that detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations are plotting to arrest him. In a series of tweets on Tuesday, the vocal senator wondered if he had done anything illegal.

"So eight DCI officers have gone to my home to look for me! What law have I broken?" he asked.
