Kenya has recently signed a contract with the National Basketball Association (NBA) allowing it to establish an office in Nairobi and assist in the growth of basketball within the Kenyan community.

The agreement signed by Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba and NBA Africa CEO Victor Williams makes Kenya the second country in the region to enter into such an arrangement after Rwanda. The signing was witnessed by President William Ruto during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). By partnering with community-based organizations and academic institutions, the NBA will aim to foster the growth of sports under Kenya's Ministry's Talanta Hela campaign.

The NBA will also provide training for coaches, develop basketball courts and host competitions. The Association is responsible for managing the professional basketball league in the US and Canada, consisting of thirty teams. It is considered the world's leading basketball league, with coaches and players among the highest-paid athletes globally. Earlier this year, the Association donated an indoor basketball court to Rwanda as part of its agreement with the country to assist in the development of basketball.

President William Ruto has signed major deals on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly which are expected to increase foreign investments in the country and promote development. Ruto also spoke about the need for Africa to be treated fairly when seeking loans in the international space. He argued that countries in debt distress should be bailed out to promote climate action and development for their people.

Ruto suggested longer tenures for sovereign debts and grace periods of five to ten years to help countries in debt distress. Additionally, he recommended addressing liquidity challenges and leveraging multilateral development banks to create additional concessional resources.
