Kenya to Cease Sending Staff for Missions Abroad from Kenya, Opts for Local Diaspora Employment

Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua has announced significant modifications to the employment of Kenyans living abroad.

Rather than dispatching Kenyans from Nairobi for state missions, the Kenyan government will now assign work opportunities for its people currently settled in the respective nations. The alteration has been implemented to reduce costs and optimize the allocation of resources. Speaking with Kenyans in Australia at a conference hosted by the Kenyan High Commission in Sydney, Mutua clarified that this method will minimize the financial outlays that arise while running missions.

Outlined in his speech was also a pledge to optimize the improvement in service delivery at Kenyan embassies worldwide. This aims to streamline the procedure for expatriates who may need necessary documentation, allowing for quicker and easier transactions. Mutua emphasized the importance of engaging with Kenyans living in Sydney, as they possess valuable ideas on how to enhance their lives and contribute to the development of Kenya. he expressed a desire to create a scheme that would enable speedy document procurement with the issuance of passports and identification cards orchestrated onsite at embassies globally.

Mutua acknowledged the complaints of Kenyans living abroad who lament over visa and nursing permit delays while also facing obstacles in sending money back home. He mentioned that some Kenyans had experienced issues at the airport, where their families' gifts were confiscated upon arrival. In response, Mutua stressed that the Kenya Revenue Authority has to conform to international best practices for arriving guests.

He revealed at the meeting that the government is diligently working on securing a bilateral labour deal with Australia for Kenyans who can enlist as seasonal employees. He intends to engage in dialogue with high-ranking dignitaries from Australia in the upcoming week to uncover ways wherein both nations can work together creating mutual advantages. Mutua praised the attempts made by the State Department of diaspora further underlining the significance of the importance of unity and support amongst Kenyans abroad.
