Kenyan-American Huldah Momanyi Hiltsley Announces Bid for Minnesota House of Representatives Seat
Huldah Momanyi Hiltsley is refusing to let defeat define her political aspirations following an unsuccessful run for the Minnesota State Senate in 2022.
Hiltsley has embarked on another campaign journey, this time to secure the highly acclaimed House of Representatives' role to represent District 38A. Hiltsley disclosed her latest bid at a ceremony on October 21 at the Brooklyn Park-based Community Activity Center. Diligently targeting to create deeper political awareness, particularly amongst her multicultural community, Hiltsley endeavours to enlighten the public about the unused resources and available funds that often go untapped due to a lack of awareness.
District 38 encompasses the entirety of Osseo and the southern half of Brooklyn Park with the other half represented by Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman. Brooklyn Park itself is a city where the majority of its residents are people of colour, constituting 55% of the population. Among these, the largest minority group is made up of individuals who identify as Black or African American, accounting for over 29% of the population according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Often called "Little Africa" by African immigrants, the city and its neighbouring Brooklyn Center are known for their vibrant community. However, some politicians, like Hiltsley, argue that the representation of individuals of African descent in leadership roles falls short beyond the local city council government. Hiltsley brings up her involvement on the board of Black Farmers as an example, highlighting the lack of legislation and policies addressing the challenges faced by Black farmers.
Hiltsley, a first-generation Kenyan immigrant who has called Minnesota home since childhood, attended Robbinsdale Cooper School and boasts an impressive academic background. She holds three bachelor's degrees and a master's degree, all earned from Bethel University, with one of her degrees specializing in International Business. Having served as the former president of Mwanyagetinge, a community organization serving Kenyans in Minnesota, she wholeheartedly dedicated herself to advocating for her community. Now, Hiltsley has shifted her focus towards the House of Representatives, propelled by a more comprehensive mission.
Her objective revolves around increasing awareness and advocating for groundbreaking policies that empower BIPOC communities and immigrants. She firmly believes that by collaboratively working together communities can become stronger. Micah LeRoy, an intern involved in Hiltsley's senatorial campaign for 2022, asserts that she wholeheartedly embodies the principle that unity leads to strength.
