Singer Avril's Bruised Selfies Go Viral, Prompting Anger and Calls for Accountability

Martin Olage Nov 15, 2023

Popular Kenyan singer Avril Nyambura took to social media on Tuesday evening to share photos of her face, which displayed visible bruises.

Although she later retracted her statement and deleted the photo, it had already been snatched up by nimble-fingered internet users who managed to take and publish screenshots of her accusations against a high-profile filmmaker, J Blessing. One of the photos shows Avril with a bruised face, suggesting that she had been involved in a physical altercation. In the second photo, she is seen wearing a beanie with a bandage on her forehead.

The post swiftly made its rounds on various blogs, generating an array of opinions from internet users. Sadly, Avril was singled out by trolls who have found amusement in her predicament. Consequently, she has been compelled to speak out against them and point out their lack of compassion. Shocked by the insensitivity in some comments, she mentions how most people shy away from sharing their ordeals since it might lead to relentless trolling that would, in turn, push them over the edge.

“Going through comments and I’m in utter shock… this is why people never report this shit, post this shit… ’cause y’all make people want to kill themselves after all they’ve been through… have a laugh… enjoy… bye,” says Avril.

Despite numerous efforts, both Avril and her partner have proven elusive and unresponsive. Moreover, the press's attempts to obtain a comment from J Blessing on the matter have fallen short. The filmmaker brushed off the request with a chuckle and hinted at the potential of addressing the controversy on social media in the future.

Numerous internet platforms have become a medium for individuals to voice their anguish regarding the photos, with many netizens denouncing acts of domestic violence and demanding accountability.
