Ichung’wah Exposes MPs for Sneaking Women into Parliament

Martin Olage Nov 28, 2023

National Assembly Majority leader Kimani Ichung’wah has raised concerns about the security of the House, alleging that two male MPs have a habit of sneaking women into Parliament.

He issued this statement during his address to Parliament on Tuesday. While he did not disclose their identities, he warned that he would expose them if the behaviour continued. Ichung'wah noted that Parliament has designated certain areas for visitors and others exclusively for sitting members. He stressed the significance of respecting these allocations, as allowing outsiders into areas intended for sitting members disrupts the efficacy of caucusing and lobbying.

"I was shocked one of these Wednesday evenings when the House sits till 9:00 pm, to walk to the member's bar, I will not name the two members who had invited visitors to the member's bar but should the same happen, I will be relying the names to your office so that you also take action," he said.

The lawmaker implored the Speaker to reiterate the regulations governing the House and its premises to fellow MPs. He stressed that the bar area is exclusively for sitting members and that inviting outsiders makes it difficult to socialize with colleagues. According to the rules of the speaker, no visitor is permitted to stay in any section of the Parliamentary Buildings or gardens beyond 8pm.

Members and Parliamentary officers are not permitted to have more than two guests on the premises after 6:00 pm unless they have received special permission. Visitors must have a pass for the current day, which should be approved by the Clerk or a parliamentary officer. Alternatively, they may have a permanent pass signed by the Speaker or the Clerk.

"Visitors nor shall any Member or Parliamentary officer, without special permission, admit or keep more than two visitors as his or her guests after 6:00 p.m," Ichungwa said.
