Tragedy Strikes as Kenyan Citizen Loses Life in Philippines Bus Accident, Another in Critical Condition
A fatal accident took place on Tuesday afternoon in the Central Philippines, where a passenger bus veered off the road and plunged down a mountain, resulting in the death of seventeen individuals, including a Kenyan citizen.
The incident took place in the town of Hamtic, located in the province of Antique. The head of the provincial disaster agency, Roderick Train, has verified the specifics of the collision. Governor Rhodora Cadiao shares that among those on board were four individuals from Kenya, with the majority being long-term residents of Antique.
Cadiao expresses worry about the dangerous bend along the road, labelling it as the "killer bend." She points out that there are already two precedents of Ceres buses crashing at the said spot. With that in mind, she suggests that the authorities abandon the dangerous road and consider constructing a safer alternative. According to Cadiao, the mishap occurred in a deep forested ravine, approximately 30 meters (100 feet) in depth, as reported by Cadiao.
Train describes the section of road as prone to accidents and mentions that seven individuals, including one of the Kenyan nationals, are in critical condition at the hospital, while four others are stable. The condition of the remaining two Kenyans is uncertain. Based on witness accounts, Train attributes the cause of the accident to a mechanical failure. Cadiao has assured that the government would provide financial support for the medical expenses and funeral costs of the victims.
Train informs that the search and rescue operation has concluded and the authorities will now concentrate on recovering the bus. He reports that they had searched for the bodies until morning and expresses exhaustion from the constant ascent and descent. The Philippines frequently witnesses fatal road accidents due to drivers disregarding regulations and vehicles being inadequately maintained or overloaded.
