Government Cracks Down on Immoral Parties in Kiambu Tea Plantations
The park and chill gatherings, which have become popular among young Kenyans, have been prohibited by Kiambu County due to their negative reputation.
During the 60th Jamhuri Day celebrations held at Kirigiti International Stadium in Kiambu on Tuesday, Kiambu County Commissioner Joshua Nkanatha revealed that stringent measures have been instigated to foil the rampant occurrence of roadside parties involving drugs and alcohol. As part of the effort, authorities are carrying out thorough investigations and making arrests to counter such illicit and destructive shenanigans. Exploring fresh methods of partying, youthful individuals have now ventured to tea plantations, especially in Limuru. Here, music provided by a DJ sets the tone for their revelry as they indulge in alcoholic drinks from the comfort of their cars.
"There is something that has been happening since the time of Covid-19 where young Kenyans have been driving their cars from Nairobi county to Limuru and Githunguri sub-counties to come and do parties where they drink and sometimes engage in sexual activities. We are saying that these games we have banned them completely," Nkanatha said on Tuesday.
Organized by TikTok enthusiasts and popular among young females, these gatherings often feature sheesha, cannabis, and other substances. Nkanatha highlights the joint efforts of the county security committee and government to enforce the necessity of a valid permit for alcohol consumption. Additionally, he clarifies that the county has successfully reduced the number of bars and liquor establishments through productive collaborations and discussions with relevant parties, ensuring that the remaining ones are operating within the legal framework.
With the holiday season rapidly approaching, the police commissioner deems it necessary to have all officers back from their scheduled leaves to maintain active surveillance of the neighbourhood. The crucial aim is to safeguard the well-being of the locals and thwart any illicit trade involving alcohol and narcotics. Acknowledging the potential for increased alcohol consumption and theft during festive celebrations, the commissioner implores individuals planning to be away from their residences to notify their neighbours as a precautionary measure against theft.
The commissioner has also issued a notice to deputy county commissioners, assistant commissioners, chiefs, officers commanding police divisions, and officers commanding stations in Kiambu County, emphasizing that no one should lose their life due to alcoholism. Additionally, he vehemently cautions against the theft of Kenya Power transformers and acknowledges that culprits have already been detained while others continue to be pursued.
