A US-Based Kenyan professor was involved in a shooting incident in Nairobi on Monday while on vacation in the country.

The clash took place in Ngara following a dispute between the professor and a police officer. According to reports, the officers observed multiple drivers utilizing the incorrect lane near the Globe Roundabout and approached them to question their behavior. Experiencing frustration, the professor exited his vehicle and engaged in a confrontation with one of the officers, leading to a physical altercation.

Regrettably, the professor suffered gunshot wounds to both of his thighs amid the confrontation when the officer employed his AK-47 rifle. The professor was immediately taken to Nairobi Hospital to receive the necessary medical treatment. Presently, authorities are conducting an inquiry into the incident and will proceed to record the professor's account once he is discharged from the hospital. In the meantime, a group of officers will be stationed at the medical facility to obtain further details from the injured party.

It is crucial to acknowledge that, as per the National Police Service Act, officers have been authorized to utilize firearms for two distinct purposes. The Act, which was revised in 2013, allows the use of force to protect oneself or others from physical harm. This modification now empowers officers to employ their weapons in defending property, even if there is no immediate threat of physical harm to themselves or others.
