The Mystery of Socialite Starlet Wahu's Death in a South B Rented Apartment

Martin Olage Jan 06, 2024

When Starlet Wahu Mwangi and John Matara, 34, met at a residence in Papino Apartments in South B Estate, Lang'ata Sub-County in Nairobi, everything appeared to be going smoothly.

Unbeknownst to Wahu, her time in the apartment would come to a tragic end. According to CCTV footage, Wahu, a prominent socialite and relative of Pastor Victor Kanyari, was donning a striking red dress, a fashionable blue denim coat, and sleek black high-heeled shoes upon their arrival. In contrast, Matara sported a blue shirt with black stripes, khaki trousers, and sturdy boots.

They rode the elevator from the basement of the building, disembarked on the fourth floor and promptly made their way to the assigned accommodation for the night. Upon entering, they partook in a bottle of whiskey and proceeded to conduct an HIV test, which yielded negative results, as verified by the police. Regrettably, it seems that the situation took a turn for the worse. On Friday, Florence Ngina, the owner of the rented apartment, informed the officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) that Matara had made a one-night reservation and checked in on Wednesday.

On Thursday morning, Ngina, accompanied by two coworkers, made their way to the South B police station to file a report regarding the horrifying event. The authorities in charge in Makadara sub-county were immediately informed, and a group consisting of crime scene specialists, DCI officers, and regular police officers quickly arrived at the site. A private investigator, speaking confidentially to the Nation, disclosed that the entirety of the house displayed the gruesome scene, with trails of blood leading from where the body was found to the bedroom.

According to an informant, the woman had sustained stab wounds to her head and right thigh, along with additional apparent signs of a physical altercation. The authorities found several objects in the room, including a Samsung phone, condoms, marijuana, a bottle of alcohol, a bloodied kitchen knife, and even an HIV test kit. The lifeless body was subsequently transported to the City Mortuary.

As the detectives painstakingly reconstructed the events of the crime, the prime suspect, Matara, sought refuge at Mbagathi County Hospital with the assistance of his friend, who goes by the name Anthony Nyongesa. It was at this medical facility that Matara was receiving treatment. The detectives were able to swiftly track him down using his personal information including his mobile phone number.
