Raila's 79th Birthday Celebration Overflowing with Cake Humor
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has once again emphasized the need for protests, this time using subtle messages imprinted on cakes to commemorate his 79th birthday.
At 3 pm in Malindi, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party organized a special event to honor Odinga, presenting him with two beautifully adorned cakes. These cakes carried a significant message, calling upon President William Ruto's administration to alleviate the financial burden faced by citizens through a reduction in taxes. The first cake, adorned with the vibrant colours of ODM, stands tall. The second cake carries a heartfelt plea on its base, urging a decrease in the tax imposed on food packaging.
The remaining three layers of the four-layered cake contain messages advocating for reducing the turnover tax, the VAT on fuel, and the housing levy, respectively. Shortly before the planned event, the opposition leader paid a visit to the Malindi Orphanage. To commemorate his birthday, he was accompanied by children, as well as his wife, Ida Odinga, and leaders from the Coastal region. As a gesture of solidarity, many Kenyans have shared photographs of the cakes they have created to honour the former Prime Minister. These thoughtful confections are adorned with resounding messages.
For instance, one supporter makes a bold statement by showcasing a cake depicting fuel prices before President William Ruto's election. The cake displays a timeline of prices, revealing that in 2018, a liter of petrol cost Ksh129, followed by Ksh130 in 2019, Ksh107 in 2020, Ksh129 in 2021, and finally reaching Ksh191 in 2022. These figures serve as a reminder to the public of the rising fuel costs under the current administration.
The messages conveyed through this display appear to resonate with many Kenyans, further solidifying their support for the former Prime Minister's call for protests, which he had announced on December 30. During his announcement, the opposition leader placed the blame squarely on the government for increasing taxes that have resulted in a challenging economic situation throughout the country.
