Martin Olage Jan 12, 2024

Unpredictable narratives often unfold within the realm of social media, beginning with a simple hashtag and propelling individuals into the spotlight.

In April 2014, former police officer Linda Okello found herself in a situation that would dramatically alter the course of her life. A picture of her donning a snug police skirt went viral, triggering a sequence of events that would ultimately lead her to a new profession as a Behaviour Therapist in the United States almost a decade later. As she reflects on that fateful April morning, Linda vividly remembers her duty of directing traffic during the KCB Safari rally in Kiambu's Migaa estate. Perplexed, she admits, "I have no clue as to who captured that photo or how it found its way onto social media. Ironically, I was conversing with my boss on the phone at that very moment."

"I was taken aback when friends started calling me in the evening, informing me that I was trending on social media," Linda recalls.

Linda found herself caught in a whirlwind of praise and backlash on social media, leaving her overwhelmed and unsure of how to handle the situation. The chaos surrounding the viral dress she wore brought about a storm of controversy, with people accusing her of dressing inappropriately and demanding that she hand over her uniform and quit her job. In response to the intense backlash, Linda ultimately decided to stop wearing the dress.

Linda had worn the same dress as part of her police uniform for seven years, and her boss had witnessed it on her countless times. However, she found herself under intense scrutiny and criticism at work. The situation escalated when her boss accused her of unauthorized media contact and fabricated corruption charges against her. These false allegations resulted in her arrest, demotion, and transfer to Molo. Throughout this entire ordeal, Linda was denied the chance to defend herself. Nonetheless, she clung to the hope that her move to Molo would provide her with a new beginning.

Linda's arrival in Molo drew a curious crowd, eager to catch a glimpse of her and her physique. This resulted in an unsettling and intimidating ordeal for her, particularly while performing her duties as a traffic officer. The workplace, previously a realm of responsibility and assistance, had morphed into a battleground of critique and commodification. Linda found herself being viewed solely as a sexual object, even her superiors began to see her as a socialite. She laments that she was denied the chance to defend herself.

In 2019, Linda Okello made a life-changing decision after dedicating 16 years to serving as a police officer. With her daughter, she embarked on a journey to the United States, leaving behind the tumultuous past that had shaped her life in Kenya. Upon arrival, Linda was resolute in her determination to forge a new path. This marked the beginning of a new chapter as she embraced a fresh career as a Behavior therapist, a profession that has empowered her to make a positive impact.
