Martin Olage Jan 18, 2024

In response to the recent rented apartment killings in Kenya, the Nigeria High Commission in Kenya (NHC) has issued a statement addressing concerns and urging Nigerians in the country to remain calm amidst online speculation.

The NHC voices their concern about the dissemination of baseless rumours linking 'Nigerians' to these heinous acts via blogs, videos, and social media posts. Additionally, the commission expresses apprehension regarding Nigerian citizens being subjected to online assaults. While advising Nigerians to adhere to the law and remain composed, the consulate suggests exercising prudence and refraining from unnecessary travel during the ongoing inquiry. They also note that they are still awaiting official correspondence from Kenyan authorities.

Attention has been drawn to the dissemination of false information aimed at Nigerians, and caution has been issued that those responsible for spreading such deceitful claims may be subject to legal repercussions. Additionally, individuals are urged to refrain from sharing misinformation and instead seek reliable information from trustworthy sources. The High Commission acknowledges the diverse ways in which false information is being spread and assures that appropriate measures will be taken in adherence to international law and the laws of the host country.

A man, believed to be Nigerian but carrying a Mozambican passport, was detained at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport while attempting to leave the country. Initially, authorities believed he was the primary suspect in the murder of a young woman named Rita Waeni at TRM Roysambu. However, subsequent inquiries have proved that he was not the individual linked to the crime, resulting in his release. This NHC announcement comes as investigations into the recent homicide of a university student, aged 20, continue.
