Graduate Who Begged for Jobs in Nairobi Streets Refutes Misinformation About Securing US Job
Mary Muiruri, a recent Actuarial Science graduate from Egerton University, has dispelled rumours about landing a job in the United States.
Last week, a photo of her seeking employment along Thika Road went viral, drawing attention to the struggles of unemployed youth in Kenya. influential figures including Kenyan rapper King Kaka shared her story. However, five days later, a tweet falsely claimed she had secured a data analyst position in the US.
"Just seen this babe got a job as a data analyst in the US. So happy to see social media work like this," the tweet claimed.
Muiruri has corrected the misinformation, saying she is actively exploring job opportunities in the technology sector, expressing interest in roles like project management, data analysis, and business analysis. On January 25th, she took to the streets once again, showcasing her qualifications, which include certifications in Google Data Analytics, Data Analytics and Visualization, Advanced SQL, Excel, and Microsoft Power BI.
"This is quite misleading. I have not gotten any job in the US yet. I am still open to opportunities in Project management and Data and business analysis," she says.
In a previous interview, Muiruri revealed the challenges she faced in job hunting, having made over 2,000 unsuccessful applications. Unable to rely on family support, she made a thoughtful decision to seek employment on the streets, highlighting the harsh reality faced by many young job seekers in Kenya.
