Moi University Implements Stringent Dress Code Policy, Prohibits 14 Outfits

Moi University has introduced new dress code guidelines to ensure that its students uphold the Code of Conduct.

The guidelines were communicated in an internal memo issued by the Dean of Students Dr. Alice Mutai on Tuesday, February 6. The memo lists several clothing items that are now considered inappropriate on campus. These include mini skirts, tight trousers, ripped jeans, short blouses or t-shirts that expose the midriff, and low-cut blouses or dresses. In addition, micro shorts, see-through dresses, clothing that reveals bra straps or sleeveless t-shirts, and garments with offensive writing are also prohibited.

Additionally, sagging trousers, clothing that reveals the chest, slippers, crocs, and any non-official plastic shoes are now included in the list of banned attire. Dr Mutai states that this decision was made due to concerns about the indecent style of dressing among students. Dr Mutai refers to Article 3.1.1 a, c, d, and e of the Rules and Regulations Governing the Conduct & Discipline of Students to emphasize the expectation for students to dress modestly and appropriately. She also warns that strict disciplinary action would be taken against students who violate the dress code. Also, university staff have been instructed not to serve students who fail to adhere to the guidelines.

University of Eldoret (UoE) and Kenya Methodist University (KeMU) have implemented dress code regulations for their students, aligning with similar measures taken by other institutions. In January 2023, UoE enforced a dress code policy after the passing of LGBTQ activist Edwin Chiloba, an alumnus of the university. KeMU also issued a memo outlining regulations that prohibit certain hairstyles, earrings, and revealing clothing. These actions demonstrate the universities' dedication to maintaining decorum and upholding standards of decency among their students.
