Kenyan Man Accused of Killing Girlfriend in Massachusetts Escapes from Police Cell in Kenya
Kevin Adam Kinyanjui Kangethe, a key suspect in a murder case in the United States, has managed to elude the police at Muthaiga Police Station.
Kangethe, 40, who was awaiting extradition on a charge of first-degree murder, disappeared without a trace after meeting with his lawyer on Wednesday evening.
In a clever twist of events, an individual pretending to be Kangethe's legal representative was allowed to visit the suspect and asked for a private conversation. The individual identified as John Maina Ndegwa was granted permission to meet Kangethe alone.
Just moments later, Kangethe made a quick escape, leaving Ndegwa behind. Nairobi Police Chief Adamson Bungei acted swiftly to address this embarrassing situation, and as a result, four officers and Ndegwa were promptly apprehended. Kangethe is accused of murdering Margaret Mbitu in Massachusetts on October 31, 2023.
After committing the crime, he fled to Kenya. On January 31, 2024, the US embassy in Kenya confirmed his arrest and commended the collaboration between Kenyan authorities in capturing the fugitive. Having been issued an Interpol Red Notice, Kangethe appeared in court on February 1, where he awaited the commencement of extradition proceedings. The victim was discovered dead in a car at an airport parking lot.
