Kenyan Man on the Run After Killing Lover in Uganda
Authorities in Tororo District are currently searching for a 34-year-old Kenyan man who is suspected of killing his partner during a domestic dispute.
The victim, Beatrice Amoit, was found dead with three head wounds behind her residence in Mangen Trading Centre, Kalait Sub County. The suspect, Robert Kanisho, is from Kabwin Village in Kururuma Sub-Location, Kenya. It has been revealed that Amoit had previously confided in the local council chairman about Kanisho's threats against her life. Despite these concerns being raised, no action was taken, and Amoit's body was discovered the following morning. The incident has been reported to the authorities, who are now working to locate Kanisho, who is believed to have fled to Kenya.
The unsettling story of domestic violence in Uganda is illuminated by statistics that reveal the extent of this pervasive issue. In a shocking revelation, Minister of Gender, Betty Amongi, discloses that 223 women and girls fall victim to gender-based violence each year. A survey conducted by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) in 2020 reveals that 95% of women and girls in Uganda have experienced physical or sexual violence.
The severity of domestic violence is further emphasized by data from the police. The 2022 Annual Crime Report recorded a total of 17,698 reported cases of domestic violence, highlighting a significant increase compared to the previous year. Within these distressing numbers, there were 301 cases of murder resulting from domestic disputes compared to 376 cases reported in 2021.
