Martin Olage Feb 20, 2024

Igembe South Member of Parliament John Paul Mwirigi was involved in a car accident on Tuesday afternoon in Chuka, Meru County.

The car carrying the lawmaker was involved in an accident in the Kirubia area. The vehicle veered off the road and rolled onto its side, sustaining damage to the front, headlights, and tyres. Fortunately, neither the MP nor any other occupants were injured. The cause of the accident remains under investigation with authorities yet to determine if the MP or his driver was behind the wheel at the time. Police officers promptly arrived at the scene and initiated an investigation.

A crowd of concerned residents congregated at the accident site offering assistance to the MP and his team. Reports indicate that the Kirubia area has witnessed three prior fatal accidents. The MP has yet to publicly comment on the incident. Notably, this event follows a similar occurrence just three days ago where Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah of Busia was involved in a collision with a runaway trailer on the Kisumu-Busia highway near Ojolla.

Omtatah, who managed to survive the accident, recounted that his car was hit by the trailer as he tried to evade it. The Senator shared his experience, mentioning that he quickly changed direction upon realizing that the trailer had lost its control, and felt lucky to have narrowly avoided death. The driver of the trailer said the brakes had malfunctioned, leading him to swerve off the road.

Despite the ordeal, the lawmaker managed to return home safely. The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) recently published a study revealing that the riskiest period for travelling on Kenyan roads is between 7-9 pm. The NTSA's findings from January 1 to February 11, 2024, highlighted that 563 people tragically lost their lives in road accidents, with pedestrians being the largest group of victims at 216 fatalities.
