Kenya Unveils New Strategic Plan for Nuclear Energy

Martin Olage Mar 16, 2024

Kenya is taking major steps towards incorporating nuclear power into its energy mix with the launch of the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency's (NuPEA) 2023-2027 Strategic Plan.

This roadmap outlines a comprehensive approach to achieving this goal, which aligns with the country's broader strategy of addressing its growing energy demands through clean, affordable, and reliable sources. The plan underscores the critical role that nuclear energy will play in Kenya's development agenda. Chairman Ezra Odhiambo emphasizes its compatibility with the nation's climate-focused energy goals.

The launch, officiated by Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir, coincides with Kenya's plan to begin construction of its first nuclear power plant in 2027, with an estimated completion timeframe of five years. This new strategic plan builds upon the successes of the previous 2020-2025 blueprint. NuPEA CEO Justus Wabuyabo highlights how the prior plan effectively streamlined the agency's operations and resource allocation, as mandated by the Energy Act of 2019 and other relevant legislation.

The current revision incorporates additional functions to ensure continued alignment with the government's evolving energy strategies, including Kenya Kwanza's Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda(BETA). BETA, a key economic plan championed by President William Ruto, aims to empower low-income Kenyans through investments in five core areas: agriculture, affordable housing, digital connectivity, healthcare, and small business support. NuPEA's strategic plan indirectly contributes to the success of BETA by ensuring a stable and sustainable energy supply.
