Chief of Defence Forces Francis Ogolla Dies in Helicopter Crash
Kenya grieves the sudden death of Chief of Defence Forces General Francis Ogolla who died tragically in a helicopter crash on Thursday afternoon.
President William Ruto has confirmed the devastating news during a national address from State House, Nairobi. General Ogolla, along with nine other military personnel, lost their lives in the accident that occurred in Sindar, Elgeyo-Marakwet County. The President expresses his deepest condolences to the bereaved families and the entire Kenyan Defence Forces (KDF).
He reveals that General Ogolla was on an official trip inspecting school renovations in Elgeyo Marakwet and meeting with troops in Turkana before the ill-fated journey to Uasin Gishu County. President Ruto, in a show of national mourning, has declared three days of reflection from April 19 to April 21, 2024. During this time, the national flag, the KDF flag, the East African Community flag, and all military formation flags will be flown at half-mast.
"Today at 2:20 pm, our nation suffered a tragic air accident at Sindar area, Kaben location, Tot division, in Elgeyo Marakwet County. I am deeply saddened to announce the passing of General Francis Omondi Ogolla, the Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces," President Ruto said in a live address to the nation from State House, Nairobi on Thursday night.
Two other military officers who were on board the helicopter miraculously survived the crash and are currently receiving medical attention in Nairobi. The cause of the accident remains under investigation. This tragedy is a significant loss for Kenya, and General Ogolla's dedication to national security will be deeply missed. President William Ruto's decision to elevate Francis Omondi Ogolla to the esteemed role of Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF) on April 28, 2023, marked a significant milestone in Ogolla's illustrious military career.
Before this prestigious appointment, Ogolla had served as the Vice Chief of the Defence Forces, a position that undoubtedly prepared him for the responsibilities that lay ahead. Ogolla's journey in the Kenya Defence Forces commenced on April 24, 1984, when he embarked on a path that would ultimately lead him to the pinnacle of military leadership. His dedication and commitment were rewarded on May 6, 1985, when he was officially commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant.
Following his initial training, Ogolla joined the ranks of the Kenya Air Force, where his talents and abilities as a fighter pilot were honed through rigorous training provided by the United States Air Force (USAF). His expertise in aerial combat operations was further enhanced as he assumed the role of an instructor pilot within the Kenya Air Force (KAF).
