Impeachment Motion Against Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi Dismissed

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi has narrowly evaded impeachment following allegations related to a fake fertilizer scandal that had drawn widespread criticism from both lawmakers and the public.

The impeachment proceedings against him were based on three primary counts including gross violation of the constitution, gross misconduct, and committing a crime under national law. An 11-member committee tasked with investigating the allegations presented its findings in the National Assembly. The Deputy Chief Whip of the Majority Party Naomi Waqo read out the committee's conclusions during the session, stating that the evidence supporting the charges against Linturi was insufficient. This announcement sparked heated reactions among Members of Parliament, prompting Speaker Moses Wetangula to intervene and restore order.

Wetangula clarified that since the committee had dismissed the allegations, further impeachment proceedings were unnecessary and the committee itself was dissolved. However, concerns were raised by Rarieda MP Otiende Omollo about potential misconduct within the committee, calling for thorough investigations into these claims. Additionally, Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi proposed that the National Assembly cease recognizing Mithika Linturi as the Cabinet Secretary, urging President William Ruto to remove him from office.

Linturi's fate had been hanging in the balance as the 11-member National Assembly Committee finalized its report on Sunday, May 12. During the hearings, the Agriculture Cabinet Secretary defended himself accusing political opponents of attempting to undermine him. Notably, he also implicated his former wife, Aldai MP Marianne Kitany, in the scandal. In response, Kitany called on the President to take decisive action and protect farmers from unscrupulous cartels selling counterfeit agricultural inputs. Her plea emphasized the need for leadership and swift intervention to address the pressing issue of fake fertilizers.

The situation remains tense with political dynamics and public scrutiny playing a significant role in determining Linturi's future as Agriculture Cabinet Secretary. Despite the committee's dismissal of the allegations, the controversy surrounding the fake fertilizer scandal continues to cast a shadow over his tenure.
