The romantic relationship between former Migori Governor Okoth Obado and Sharon Otieno was widely known.

Testifying before Justice Cecilia Githua, Senior DCI officer Ole Sena confirmed that Obado's affair with Sharon was widely known among county employees, although it remains uncertain whether Sharon's family was aware of the relationship. The court heard gripping details of how Obado's wife discovered the affair during a trip to London with her husband. The matter of Sharon's pregnancy surfaced when Obado's son Dan received sonogram images from Sharon, which he then shared with his mother and family members.

Phone records presented as evidence revealed communication between Obado and Sharon with her contact saved as 'hunny' on Obado's iPhone. These revelations came after Obado was summoned for interrogation at the Kisumu DCI office, where his phone was confiscated. The tragic events unfolded when Sharon was abducted alongside a key witness from a hotel in Rongo town. According to Sena's testimony, the abduction led to her vehicle being driven by Obado's assistant Micheal Oyamo. Sharon's body was later discovered in a forest, sparking widespread public outrage.

Subsequently, the former Governor was arrested and charged with aiding and abetting the murder of his ex-girlfriend, a pregnant university student. Obado has since maintained his innocence, pleading not guilty. As the prosecution closed its case against Obado, Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Ole Sena provided a detailed account that led to his recommendation of charges. DNA tests confirmed Obado as the father of Sharon's unborn child with a staggering 99.99+ per cent certainty. The postmortem examination revealed that Sharon succumbed to force trauma.

The trial has been marred by several delays, including an adjournment to allow a co-accused time to mourn the loss of his wife and child in a road accident. The case is set for mention on June 20, 2024, for direction on filing submissions on whether there is a case to answer. Meanwhile, Justice Githua has granted Obado's request to release his passport for business travel to China, with the condition of returning it by July 9.
